Will make a great WaybackProxy surfer on a private network.

I have an old T40 that I keep around, it was running an LXLE distro, but I needed XP on it to run an old piece of software. I had a full set of XP recovery images, but those failed to load. I think the Grub loader for Linux had botched the disk in a way that the recovery images could not deal with.
Anyway, the install for this worked perfectly, first I dropped into the manual disk formatter, deleted all partitions, ran the long format NTFS formatter (which takes about twenty minutes) and I was back in business with XP Pro. The machine never connects to the network when running XP, so I am not concerned about it getting hacked. I just needed it to run some old automotive diagnostic software that I rarely use. I'll probably leave XP on it for now (the car is fixed) since I haven't fired up LXLE in over a year.
The laptop originally came with XP Pro, and has a valid license sticker on it still, and had been upgraded to SP3 when that was first released.
I think back to when I first got the T40 in January of 2004. It was a hot piece of hardware back then. My have times changed.
Subject: Worked perfectly on my T41 2373
Interestingly, I did not encounter problems that other person with a 2373 reported. To the contrary, restoring from these CDs fixed an issue I had with my machine, where the OS would not recognise the USB ports as 2.0 (only as 1.1).
Big thank you to the uploader, model-specific restore disks such as these can be surprisingly hard to find!

A few notes for anyone else doing this.
My original HDD had died. I replaced it with an 80GB Hitachi one for £25 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005OPYH7I/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
The restore CDs will install Windows XP Service Pack 2. After installing I tried connecting to the internet using wired ethernet. Whilst I was able to connect to google.com using Internet Explorer 6 I wasn't able to navigate to any other web pages - the browser would display an error message and no content was loaded.
I tried connecting to WiFi. Windows XP could see my network but when clicking on it it would fail to connect. I thought it was either because the Intel 2100 B mini PCI wireless card drivers were out of date or that my Wifi protocol was too new for the card to recognise it. I am using Google WiFi which supports 802.11a/b/g/n/ac - the Wifi card definitely supports 802.11b.
The solution was to download XP service pack 3 onto a USB drive and install that first. This allowed me to connect to WiFi.
I then was able to:
- Run Windows Update
- Install Google Chrome
- Update Symantec Antivirus
This machine is 16 years old at the time of writing (May 2020) so it needs a bit of coaxing back into the modern world.
Subject: Not great for a T41 2373, YMMV
This worked mostly okay for my T41 2373, but there are several incompatible drivers for SM Bus, Ethernet, WLAN, and one "unknown" device - which is funny because that's the very issue I was trying to resolve with my previous reinstall of the OS and drivers, so...naturally...
